Today, Terri Fischer, educational solutions representative from Waste Management, presented Dr. Jennifer Griffin, assistant academic dean of Thiel College, with a check for $5,000. The funds were donated to the college through the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit program (EITC), which allows businesses to direct a portion of their tax dollars to support local organizations, which are designated by the state as approved scholarship, educational improvement and/or pre-kindergarten scholarship organizations. Thiel College is an approved educational improvement organization with the program, providing educational outreach to local K-12 schools through programs such as College for Kids, Thiel Scholars and Earth Week. Thanks to Waste Management for their support!
As college tuition has consistently outpaced the ability of people to pay out of pocket, debt has been the safety valve of our higher education system. It is what has allowed everything to keep running because people know they have to go to college — they don’t feel they have any choice — so they just continue to borrow and borrow and borrow.
